about
Hi! I’m Mel — a graphic designer and artist from Kingston, Ontario. I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember. Later in life, I taught myself to work in oil, acrylic, watercolour, and pointillism with ink. A lot of my pieces are inspired by music, turning the feeling of a lyric into something visual.
Design interests me for the same reason art does — it’s not just about how it looks, it’s about how it feels. After studying design and advertising, I pursued a degree in communications, which gave me a deeper understanding of how visuals tell stories, shape ideas, and connect people.
I’ve had the opportunity to work on projects I’m very proud of, like Tri-Art’s Artist Spotlight series, where I designed and proposed the project; interviewed artists; storyboarded videos; and collaborated with a team of creatives. That work helped grow our Instagram audience by over 10,000 people.
I’m especially proud of my community-focused projects — donating thousands of dollars’ worth of art supplies to multiple charities and non-profits including the school sector, Living Room Community Art Studio and Providence Care hospital. Those donations gave kids, patients, low income families and other community members the tools to create and express themselves. I’ve also been a part of the adaption of short documentaries to share these stories and encourage even more people to get involved.
Outside of work, you can find me enjoying the outdoors, in the gym or yoga studio, cooking, or listening to a good podcast. I am a huge advocate for the benefits of challenging ourselves, exploring new limits and experiences - and most importantly always having FUN!
Good design makes you look. Great design makes you feel.
